Her silence, in the face of repeated rapes and hideous torture, prevented his arrest, and now he's participating in the new regime's rather weak and toothless investigation of these atrocities. Weaver is the wife of an important government official (Stuart Wilson) who, like her, was a student activist in the days of the old regime, but who was never a prisoner. The setting is an isolated cottage on a coastal road in an unnamed South American country (Dorfman is Chilean) during a period of democratic reform. Each plot development feels like a jump-start, to move the piece a few more blocks before it peters out again. After that, the script (by Dorfman and Rafael Yglesias) has little left to do but let the characters deliver long monologues to each other. The plot goes through a variety of disbelief-overloading gymnastics to give a former political prisoner (Sigourney Weaver) the drop on the man (Ben Kingsley) she believes was her torturer of years earlier. What he wasn't able to do is give substance to Dorfman's creaky dramaturgy. The film is a model of unfussy stage-to-screen transmigration-Polanksi allowed it to retain its basic shape as a one-set, three-character play without giving us claustrophobia. Still, Polanski did his best-he gave Dorfman's dreary, annoyingly earnest revenge melodrama about political torture a smooth, elegant rendering onscreen. Shakespeare to Ariel Dorfman-what a comedown. NO, THIS CANNOT BE, THIS CAN.Except for Roman Polanski's 1971 adaptation of Macbeth, the new film Death and the Maiden is his only film version of a play. My enemy is now determined to give me the finishing thrust. The enemy's maiden nods her warrior while she smiles triumphant. IS THIS TRUE? WILL I BE KILLED IN BATTLE? AHHH! I AM PIERCED TO DEATH! The enemy's maiden says to mine: YOUR WARRIOR HAS BEEN DEFEATED, AND NOW HE MUST DIE! My maiden nods, almost frozen, horrified but excited at what she is witnessing. Now the wound is mortal! My blood is staining the hot desert sand. I am aware of it so I try to resist but, after some struggling at excruciating pain ARRRRGH!, I surrender and fall backwards while my killer still keeps my chest penetrated.Īt this point I am doomed, the enemy's maiden instructs him to render me completely submitted, I AM AT HIS MERCY! He plunges his spear deeper UUNNNGH!. Their goal is to submit me and make me fall backwards.

The enemy's maiden gives him precise instructions to move so that his spear does not lose grab of my ribs.

On the other hand, his maiden is plenty confident, she is only 18 but has received intensive training since she was 13 as to how to give death to an Egyptian warrior.

My opponent awaits more orders from his maiden, he is also bewildered because he is novice too.

She looks like bewildered but, inside her, she is turning on and does not know why. I AM WOUNDED! I let my spear loose and grab my enemy's trying not to let it go deeper. The enemy's maiden is more skillfull than mine, and shortly I become unexpectedly pierced in my ribs. When I engage my opponent he is inexpert too, so we rely on our maidens to give combat instructions. Both, she and me are completely novice at battle. I have been assigned a young maiden to monitor my combat. I have given one spear, no shield, and very little gear which just spot me as an Egyptian warrior. I have been recruited to fight against the Hittites, enemies of Egypt.
